Riwhi returns to Sharks for 2025 season

Joseph Riwhi is back with the Southland Sharks for the 2025 Sal’s New Zealand National Basketball League season.

Riwhi who pulled on Sharks colours for the first time last year, has impressed Head Coach Jonathan Yim with his off-season work.

“I’m really happy to have Joey back with us for another year. He has put in a lot of work leading up to the season, and his consistency has been impressive. His approach to training, preparation, and overall commitment has been top-notch. We’ve started to see the results of his effort on the court, and it’s a testament to the work he’s put in behind the scenes. His focus and determination have set a strong example for the rest of the group.”

“More importantly, Joey has been a great teammate. He’s played a big role in welcoming the new players, making sure they feel comfortable and integrated into the team and the city. His willingness to go the extra mile for his teammates speaks volumes about his character and the value he brings to us both on and off the court, Yim said.

After getting his first taste of the Sharks twelve months ago, Riwhi is stoked to be back in the programme for a sophomore season.

“I am fizzing for another year in orange! I’m really loving how the team vibe and chemistry has come together already. Being around Coach Yim is nothing to take for granted. His experience and knowledge is a rarity to have access to, so I’m just being a sponge!”

The Southland Sharks tip off their season in Dunedin against the Otago Nuggets on Friday 14 March with their first of eleven home games against Manawatu Jets on Saturday 29 March. Season tickets are on sale now from ILT Stadium Southland or online at sharksbasketball.flicket.co.nz.
