A Southland Sharks National Basketball League record is set to tumble.
In 2015 the Sharks created history winning 16 games in a row on the way to winning the NBL title that season.
The Wellington Saints equalled that 16-game winning streak on Sunday with a 106-95 win over the Super City Rangers.
Barring a remarkable upset the Saints now look set to make it win No 17 this weekend and overhaul Southland.
Wellington will play bottom of the table Hawke's Bay on Saturday night and the form guide suggests it should be one-way traffic.
Ironically a key figure in pushing Southland to that 16 game streak and the title in 2015, Kevin Braswell, is now the coach of the Saints.
With two games to play Wellington are already confirmed as the round-robin top qualifiers with Southland, Super City Rangers, and Canterbury all scrap it out to try to avoid finishing fourth and a date with the Saints in the semifinals.
Southland currently sits second on nine wins, with the Rangers and Canterbury third and fourth on eight wins.
However, the Rangers do have an extra game to play.
Southland's next game is against Taranaki in Invercargill on Friday night.
