Southland boasts a proud history with the game of basketball and after years of vision, dedication and hard work it all finally paid off as the SIT Zero Fees Southland Sharks joined the New Zealand National Basketball League for the first time in 2010.

Thanks to a determined committee as well as numerous support people all doing their best to keep the dream alive, we were able to deliver arguably the most professional organisation, the most fanatical crowds as well as some of the most exciting basketball the NBL has seen in years.

In 2013 all the hard work paid off when, in his first year, head coach Paul Henare took the team to the Bartercard National Basketball League title in style, which was repeated in 2015. Coach Henare was awarded a key to the city by Major Tim Shadbolt in recognition.  In 2018, with coach Judd Flavell at the helm the Sharks won their 3rd NBL title and in 2020 and 2022 3x3 National titles were achieved .

Over 15 years, our Sharks have proven that we can foot it with the best in the country and look to continue to do so in the upcoming season with the support of our great fans , sponsors and partners.
